1969, (previously published in England under the title The Africans), Little Brown, Boston, MA. Hardcover title, 367 pages, b&w photos throughout. Interesting drawings. Notes and references / bibliography extend to 32 pages. The author, at this point in his career, had written 12 books on Africa, many of them adopted for courses and study by those interested in the subject. Here he asks critical questions concerning the foundations and social structures of a number of traditional African societies. These tribes are sometimes nomadic, trading and agricultural based. A beautifully done book by a man who knows what he's talking about.
